There are several different leadership styles, and we have unpacked them in past Learning to Lead live events. This week we dug into a controversial style, pacesetting leadership. Be sure to check out the replay to hear the discussion, debates, examples, and thought-provoking questions.
Like many leadership styles it’s important to know why you are flexing a specific style, what are the anticipated goals and outcomes are, and continually checking in on your team. Pace setting leadership can net amazing results, but it is also risky. Here are a few takeaways and considerations from our discussion:
Pace setting leaders are:
Highly motivated
Strong desire to succeed
Sets high standards of extreme performance
Expects (assumes) team members have the same or more self-motivation and drive as the leader
Provides little to no guidance / feedback along the way to ensure things are done correctly
Expects team members to be competent enough to achieve the tasks without being told
Great initiative to get things done - striving against time to achieve their goals as quickly a possible
Takes over tasks if a team member is not performing at the expected level of performance as they do not want to fall behind
Advantages of pace setting leadership:
Able to achieve results quickly
In the short term, there will be high energy within the team with outstanding performance in achieving and high-quality work
Highlights the competency of a highly skilled and experienced team
Can be a great learning opportunity to invest in highly competent teams
Can be a great reminder of what teams are capable of - doing the impossible
If you are an energetic entrepreneur working with a like-minded team on developing and announcing a new product or service, this style may serve you well
Disadvantages of pace setting leadership:
Can stress and overwhelmed team members and lead to burnout
If a team is not highly motivated – things will rapidly fall apart
Team members that prefer more guidance will lose motivation and become quickly overwhelmed by this leadership style
Loss of trust – staff feeling insufficient and unable to meet the leader’s expectations and are stressed that the leader may dismiss their work
Low employee engagement – loss of team spirit/morale
How to successfully apply pace setting leadership:
Make sure your high-quality expectations are clearly defined
Begin each project by making sure that all requirements are clearly understood before asking team members to complete their assigned tasks
Ensure the team understands the “why” behind the timelines and pace
Clearly communicate timelines and move quickly to a sustainable pace
Remember there are advantages and disadvantages to every leadership style. Spend time understanding each style and when it may be appropriate to use and get comfortable knowing you will likely flex between multiple styles. Pace setting can seem like a risky style to try, but it can have powerful benefits to your team and business when used intentionally.
Quote of the Week:
I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say “because of you, I didn’t give up.”
