Leaders Never Stop Learning
Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. - John F. Kennedy
We have been spending the last few weeks in the Learning to Lead live events focusing on the 6 most common leadership styles. This week, I took some advice we’ve given others and took a break.
Rest days are important, they are necessary, and they can be the means to survival. Maybe it’s required for health reasons, maybe it’s listening to our mind and acknowledging when to take a break to avoid burnout.
During this break I was also reminded of the importance of continuing to learn, and how necessary it is to be a successful leader, no matter your level or span of control. My days are filled with big and small lessons, and the first step is noticing the lesson. How do you learn; do you learn?
On this “break” week I wanted to share a few lessons I have learned from others this weekend:
Is it a great resignation or a great re-evaluation of how people spend their time? I love this idea and framing of what is going on in the world:
Sharing the process of learning to be a leader requires vulnerability, but it has profound impact on those in our networks. A new vice president shared her lessons from a few weeks on the job. One of my favorites:
Your voice holds more weight than you realize. What feels like a simple brainstorm to you may feel like a directive to others. Suggestion: clarify (often) the purpose of each discussion and genuinely invite others to challenge you.
Take breaks. Take time off, for yourself and your team. Remember, you set an example and model behavior for success.
Failure is a part of learning. Don’t try to avoid failure, try to fail better each time. If you’re not failing you are likely in your comfort zone and not challenging yourself.
Be brave enough to try something new. Be brave enough to follow your joy. Be brave enough to prioritize what you really value.
Quote of the Week:
The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice. - Brian Herbert
