Flexing Leadership Styles
Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. – John F. Kennedy
This was the final week of exploring the leadership styles from Daniel Goleman’s 6 most common leadership styles. In the replay of our live discussion this week on clubhouse we did a refresher and tested our knowledge by working on the vignettes as well as assessing pop-culture characters, like Darth Vader, and Captain America. Listen to the full replay below to test your own knowledge! If you’d like more of a refresher on the leadership styles, here are links to each of our write-ups:
Pace Setting: results-oriented style that can net amazing results, but be careful of the burning out your team
Democratic: a style where team members are involved in decision making and work together
Commanding: a directive style useful in situations requiring 100% compliance
Coaching: a popular style that focuses on teaching and guiding team members
Affiliative: this style is highly focused on harmony and the culture of how a team gets along
Visionary: the style that can inspire teams to accomplish great things
As we have explored this week, each leadership style has its strengths and its weaknesses. As leaders, we can learn to become more self-aware and know when to flex to each style. In addition, the more we know the more effective we can be at teaching our team.
By spending time talking through different scenarios it was amazing to see how often we move fluidly move between styles, and this series helped us name each style.
As you enter this next week, pay attention to the styles you use, the styles you see in leaders around you, and even on tv.
We will be back live next Saturday from 9:30-10:30 am PT on Clubhouse; join us for another lively discussion. The topic will be announced on Wednesday, April 27 right here!
Learning is not a one-time event or a periodic luxury. Great leaders in great companies recognize that the ability to constantly learn, innovate, and improve is vital to their success. – Amy Edmondson
